Hypertension
Impacting the lives of over 73.6 million Americans and another 175 million Europeans and Canadians, hypertension is a chronic condition that significantly increases the risk of stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and kidney disease.
If effectively managed, numerous studies have also shown that a decrease in blood pressure can significantly reduce the risks of adverse events. However, if left uncontrolled, an increase of 20 mmHg in systolic blood pressure or 10 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure above normal level is associated with a two-fold increase in mortality from ischemic heart disease and stroke.
Yet, despite the significant cardiovascular and stroke risks associated with hypertension, less than a third of patients with hypertension are being effectively managed medically, representing a shocking number of patients at risk of life altering co-morbidities and life threatening adverse events.
